New Zealand’s tennis sensation, Lulu Sun, clinched the most significant title of her career by triumphing at the NZ$166,000 World Tennis Tour tournament held in Bonita Springs, Florida.

Having recently switched her allegiance from Switzerland to her country of birth, New Zealand, Sun displayed her prowess by defeating the United States’ Maya Joint 6-1 6-3 in the tournament final.

At 23 years old and now ranked 132 in the world, Sun has earned NZ$228,000 in prize money this year, marking a remarkable ascent in her career.

While Sun had previously claimed victory in six WTT tournaments, her recent win is considered the pinnacle of her achievements so far. Seeded No. 2 in the tournament, her success underscores her growing stature in the tennis world.

Born in Te Anau, Sun moved to Switzerland during her childhood years. Despite representing New Zealand briefly as a junior at Wimbledon in 2018, it was anticipated that she would compete for Switzerland on the global stage.

However, after participating in the ASB Classic in Auckland in January, where she advanced to the second round of the main draw, Sun announced her decision to switch allegiances and play under the New Zealand flag.

In a statement released in March, Sun expressed her deep commitment to New Zealand, describing it as a pivotal moment in her career and a tribute to her roots.

With this victory, Sun solidifies her position as New Zealand’s highest-ranked singles player. Additionally, she showcased her versatility by reaching the doubles final alongside her Hungarian partner, Fanny Stollar, and securing another impressive win.

Looking ahead, Sun may team up with Erin Routliffe for the doubles event at the Paris Olympics in July, further solidifying her presence on the international tennis stage.
