Accepting the award on stage at the Palm Springs Convention Center, she said: “I went home over Christmas, I lost my parents, and I’m in a situation where I’m like, “It’s different now.”

Her mother, Janelle, tragically passed away on the final day of the Venice Film Festival in September, just hours before she was to win the Best Actress award for her role in Baby Girl.

Director Halina Lane read a statement from Nicole, revealing that Nicole’s mother, Janelle, passed away at the age of 83 while in Venice.
Nicole continued, “Now that I’m on stage and I’m back here, thank you for giving me the opportunity to say this is for my mom.
“My whole career was for my mother and father, but they are no longer here and I want to continue working and contributing to the world.
“I’m sorry, I’m crying. I didn’t want to do that, but right now I feel like mom. This is for your mom.”
Nicole was born in Honolulu and raised in Sydney by her beloved mother Janelle and psychologist father Anthony (who passed away in September 2014).

The two have remained closely involved in her career over the years, with Nicole recently admitting that she still goes to her mom for advice.
In November, the Big Little Lies star said that despite working with a professional stylist, she often turned to her mother, Janelle, for advice on clothes.
Nicole had a similarly close relationship with her father Anthony and was devastated when he died of a heart attack in September 2014 at the age of 75 (pictured in 2005).
“My mom is still very interested in what I wear,” Nicole told People magazine, demonstrating their close bond.
Although Nicole is known for her bold fashion choices, she said it was her mother and grandmother who first fostered her love of clothes.
“I love fashion. I’ve always loved fashion,” she said while speaking at the Planet Omega pop-up launch in New York.
