A manhunt is underway for a murder suspect following a “serious assault” on a woman in her 40s in Plymouth. At around 8.55pm on Wednesday, officers were called to West Haw Road in Plymouth after a woman known to be the attacker was found with serious injuries.

The victim, a woman in her 40s, was treated by paramedics at the scene and rushed to Derriford Hospital in the city, but unfortunately she was pronounced dead in the early hours of the morning. Her next of kin was notified.

Police have now launched an urgent murder investigation and are working desperately to track down the perpetrator, who is still on the run.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the man being sought by homicide detectives was an acquaintance of the woman, but his identity has not yet been released.

Armed police and emergency services swooped on the scene last night and a large number of police units remain at the scene carrying out extensive questioning and searches in the area.

Five heavily armed police officers are believed to have stormed the flats in the Great Western Road complex, but left shortly after.

Emergency services rushed to the scene in the Westhoe area of ​​Plymouth at around 9pm last night.

Police have set up a police cordon between Great Western Road and West Haw Road after a woman was found “seriously injured” in the road.

Security personnel were stationed at the scene, and local roads were closed overnight and into the morning.

Armed police were also seen searching apartments near the waterfront, which were under a police cordon.

One witness at the scene told MailOnline last night: “The situation on the ground is not very good.

“I arrived at 9.15am. When I arrived on the scene, the incident was in its early stages and armed police were present.

“The police community response team then arrived 15 minutes later.”

DCI David Pebworth said: “A cordon will likely be in place throughout the day and police forces will also remain in the area.”
