Anna Lee read about a hack in which airline employees at the check-in counter were given a box of chocolates in hopes of getting a free upgrade.
She explained that she had known about the trick for years, but that asking for a free upgrade was “too scary, awkward, and weird.”
But her cousin, who works as a flight attendant for a major airline, said many passengers ask for free upgrades “all the time” so “it’s nice to do it with a gift.”
So Anna decided to put her theory to the test when she took a six-hour flight from Las Vegas to New York City after Christmas.
Before boarding her flight, Anna bought a box of chocolates and headed to the check-in counter, where she surprised a Delta employee with a gift.
After a while, she asked the employee, “How much does it cost to upgrade my seat?”
To her surprise, the employee was kind enough to offer her a free upgrade from Economy Class to Comfort Plus. This includes several perks, including priority boarding, more legroom, additional recline, and dedicated overhead shelf space.

“I’ve always been interested in it, but never acted on it until recently when I asked my cousin who works for an airline. She said it was perfectly fine.
“I thought I’d give it a try…I wasn’t expecting an upgrade. I was thankful that the employee finally upgraded me…and it actually worked.” i can’t believe.”
A solo traveler filmed herself handing chocolates to employees and saying, “I had a great holiday and just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work.”
She then told the employee that she wanted to upgrade her seats but wanted to know how much it would cost.
“I wasn’t expecting anything, but she upgraded me,” Anna said.
She can’t believe her luck when an employee happily upgrades her for free, and she’s stunned that the chocolate actually worked in her favor.
“I got an upgrade,” she says excitedly in the video.
“I wasn’t expecting anything…I just wanted to see if it would work, and it did.”
Anna said she had heard that airlines sometimes have to shuffle seats to “balance the plane.”
“So if there are too many people in the back, they’ll upgrade some people to the front for free.” Knowing that information, I just wanted to make it clear that they should pick me. ” she said.
“It never hurts to try sometimes.”

“My boyfriend is a flight attendant, and he taught me to bring a Starbucks gift card as a ‘tip’ on every flight and give it to him before takeoff. They always give us extra snacks and drinks,” one person revealed.
Many airline employees agree that a little goes a long way when it comes to staff hospitality.
“We airline employees often do things like this for our co-workers (of course without expecting anything in return), but they always treat us with the best.” , one person shared.
“As a flight attendant, I can tell you that gate agents are highly undervalued and have more power than people realize. They are responsible for upgrades and they can also kick people out. They’re in charge so be nice to them,” another added with a laugh.
Meanwhile, one woman said she was lucky to get the free upgrade without having to gift anyone.
“I usually just ask for an upgrade and usually receive it without the chocolate. I think as long as you’re nice and have space, you’ll upgrade as much as you can,” she said.
