There are many reasons to be appalled by the news that Keir Starmer is breaking his promise to the people and returning the country to strict EU control.

This man’s utter duplicity, the blatant lies he told us during the July election.

He said he would respect voters and there was no turning back on the Brexit referendum. He was adamant that there would be no return to the single market, no customs union, and no return to free movement of citizens within the EU.

Perhaps we were crazy to believe him. Perhaps we should have remembered that he tried to block Brexit dozens of times in Parliament and called for a second referendum.

Perhaps we should have called him out last July and claimed he was lying just to get elected. But for some reason he looked so displeased and seemed so sharply resentful of any challenge to his correctness that we gave him the benefit of the doubt. did.

Millions of people went to the polls honestly believing that leaving the EU was safe under a Labor government. It’s clear Starmer was making fun of them.

As revealed by the Mail on Sunday, he has set up a huge negotiating team in the Cabinet Office. This is larger than the team of civil servants who initially delivered Brexit. Their mission is clear. It is about slowly pulling us back into the EU’s orbit. To the point where Britain is effectively a colony, a client state, a vile gnawing at Brussels’ orange balls.

Negotiations with the EU are scheduled to begin in February, but the demands of the other side are frightening. This is not a “reset”. This isn’t about improving the “atmosphere” of discussions with friends or partners.

If the UK accepts any of these proposals, our feet will be sliding desperately on a sloping, waterlogged deck and we will soon find ourselves back in the jaws of the EU machine. We already know of three main EU proposals.

First, they want to take back Britain’s fishing industry – at the moment when, under the terms of the EU Withdrawal Agreement, the entirety of Britain’s great marine wealth returns to this country. From 2026, we and we alone will decide who fishes for which fish.

We, not the EU, decide how allocations and stocks are managed. Decide whether to allow foreign supertrawlers to sail the Channel and the North Sea seabed. We will finally atone for the betrayal of 1973 when we abandoned the rights of British fishing communities in the Heath negotiations. And of course the EU is afraid of this moment.

They want the legal and permanent right to catch our fish, especially the French, and it is important that we do not surrender. Remember what’s really at issue here. The part about fish is only part of it.

It is fundamentally about legal authority. It’s about control. It’s about power.

When the UK left the EU, we regained full national independence. So Starmer and Labor’s strategy is clear. They must bring us back into the EU bit by bit by destroying our principles, eroding our independence and regaining control.

This is why the EU’s next demand is a return to the free movement of people. This is presented as a modest measure called the Youth Mobility Plan, aimed at everyone between the ages of 18 and 30. But have you ever counted the EU nationals who belong to that age group?

Their number is approximately 70 million. If we agree to this, we will be telling the continent’s 70 million people that they can live and work in this country without any hindrance and have access to hospitals, welfare services and everything else. Is that the way to deal with the problem of mass immigration? Just widen the door again?

Of course not. That’s madness. And it would be madness to agree to the EU’s final demands. In other words, we should accept the great and sometimes outrageous content of the EU’s food and agricultural laws and become “rule takers” with no say in how they are made.

In fact, the EU is going even further. Just as they want us to “dynamically align” with the EU, so that we are somehow forced to accept bottle-top-bound EU rules. , as we continually click our heels and bow respectfully to new EU rules, no matter how infuriating they may be.

Of the three demands of the EU, this one is the real nightmare. Because this would bring us back to the single market. By losing control over agriculture, we lose much of our freedom to enter into good free trade agreements like the one we have with the United States.

By agreeing to the judgment of the European Court of Justice without having a judge in the court! – We have ignored one of the fundamental principles of Brexit. And for what purpose?

What on earth is Starmer trying to achieve by moving this economy closer to the EU at the very moment when the EU model is clearly failing?

It seems to be Labour’s belief that joining the EU will somehow lead to a better, kinder and more ideal future for Britain. But has Mr Starmer stopped to look at what the Brussels system is actually achieving?

France and Germany both just recorded negative growth. The euro is under pressure. And across the continent, we are seeing the far right begin to make serious inroads for the first time since the 1930s, as there is great dissatisfaction with the EU’s immoral stagnation.

In Romania, a pro-Putin right-wing thug was on the verge of winning the presidential election, and a Romanian court abruptly canceled the vote while the city of Brussels coughed and turned a blind eye.

No, I cannot say that the EU is functioning. As I have pointed out many times in this column, the United States is opening up a truly astonishing gap in wealth and productivity over Europe, and it is a country from which we can learn.

France is currently poorer than Arkansas, the poorest state in the United States. If things continue on this path, by 2035, just 10 years from now, the relative poverty gap between the United States and Europe will be as wide as the gap between Europe and India today.

We need to learn from the United States, with its culture of innovation, enterprise, and low taxation, rather than the EU, with its Brussels-led culture of welfarism and increased regulation.

This EU renegotiation is taking Britain completely in the wrong direction, at a time when Starmer and Rachel Reeves have already succeeded in destroying economic growth with a disastrous tax-hike budget.

Above all, Starmer does not have the authority to do it. He has no mandate to set up a Whitehall Surrender Force, no mandate for these talks, any more than he had a mandate for tax increases. He lied about both.

Labor came to power through deception. Of course we must respect the law and the Constitution.

But I urge everyone who cares about democracy and the economic salvation of this country to fight, fight, and fight again for the freedoms that our people voted for and believed to be safe in 2016. I’ll call you.
