Wind power sets a new UK record on an intense banking holiday | Climate News

The UK wind farm set a new clean energy record on Monday, producing nearly half of its power system, thanks to the harsh weather on bank holidays.

According to the Guardian, more than 17.6 gigawatts (GW) of electricity was generated by offshore and onshore wind turbines for the first time in the middle of the afternoon (3:30 pm). This is enough to power 3.5 million kettles.

According to data from the operator’s National Grid ESO, this represents nearly half (48.5%) of the power grid in England, Scotland and Wales, surpassing the previous record of 17.5 GW set on February 13.

This was more than a combined contribution of gas plants, nuclear reactors and biomass burners.

On Monday afternoon, the gas plant powered 21.7% of the grid, the reactor produced 12%, and the biomass power generation unit supplied 6.1%.

In a tweet, ESO said wind power generated just over 35% of the country’s electricity.

Can the UK be a leader in wind power?

“The fact that wind power produces almost half of the country’s electricity shows that wind power is at the heart of modern energy systems.

“A healthy pipeline of UK wind energy projects to be built onshore and offshore will help achieve the government’s goal of zero net emissions as soon as possible.

“As we increase the capacity of renewable energy, we can expect fresh records in the coming years.”

Powermix Wind has the largest share of 60%, which occurred early on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, when turbines were producing 14.2 gigawatts of electricity in Storm Francis.
