Rafael Nadal overcomes mistakes and Ricardas Berankis reaches Wimbledon third round

In the end, both results counted the same, but while Novak Djokovic produced a nearly flawless display to advance Wednesday, Rafael Nadal was more selective in finding his best form to defeat Ricardas Berankis on center court and move on to the third round of WImbledon.

As Nadal’s half of the draw contenders fall, the comparison to Djokovic and the level that will almost certainly be needed to win the calendar’s third Grand Slam leg has been clarified. But, for a player whose year has been defined by rediscovering the peak of his powers, it was far from a vintage performance from the two-time Wimbledon champion.

A 6-4 6-4 4-6 6-3 slog against world number 109 Berankis was largely defined by erratic strikes and unforced errors from the Spaniard. A two-set lead was established despite Nadal looking far from his best, with the 36-year-old preventing what could have turned into an awkward evening by waking up to the big moments and Berankis’ saving grace to the taken on occasion.

Wimbledon: Rafael Nadal analyzes the victory of Ricardas Berankis

“It’s a chance to progress, I’m very happy. I have to improve,” Nadal said.

“The fourth set was much better, a good level of tennis, the service worked better. I played a little more aggressive on the forehand.

Too many mistakes at the start. It’s a process, it’s important to know it’s not perfect, to be humble and to accept the challenge. Think positive even when things aren’t going the best way possible.
