Why Novak Djokovic isn’t happy with Daniel Collins’ bullish attitude at Australian Open – ‘Big fan’

Novak Djokovic has expressed his admiration for controversial Australian Open player Danielle Collins amid concerns over unruly crowd behavior at Melbourne Park. During his victory over Tomas Machak, Djokovic faced persistent heckling from fans, prompting him to plead for calm from officials. Collins, known as the “most hated player in tennis,” drew ire for her taunting antics after defeating Destany Aiava, like slapping her butt and criticizing the audience. Despite her polarizing reputation, Djokovic praised Collins, stating he appreciated her humor and confidence, while acknowledging the disruptive crowd dynamics in the tournament. He is set to face Jiri Rehecka next.

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has declared himself a “huge fan” of Australian Open villain Daniel Collins, amid fears that unruly crowd behavior at Melbourne Park could escalate.

The 37-year-old Djokovic had to endure persistent jeers from drunken fans during his straight-sets victory over 26th seed Tomas Machak at Rod Laver Arena on Friday.

The 10-time champion was seen pleading with the referee to calm down the frenzied supporters, and his frustration was evident after the fight progressed to the fourth round.

At one stage Djokovic’s temper almost got the better of him.

Fed up, he told his supporters: “Shut up, you idiot.”

Then, seconds after hitting the game-winning backhand passing shot down the line, the No. 7 seed turned to a heckler in the crowd and announced who had won.

British left-hander Jack Draper also took it from the ‘fans’ after defeating local prospects Thanasi Kokkinakis and Aleksandar Vukic.

And Collins clearly loves her polarizing situation.

Djokovic said Collins was “funny and smart” as the Australian crowd played against her on court.

The 10-time Australian Open champion recently visited Melbourne’s Urbunsurf Surf Park with his family.

She has been branded the “most hated athlete in the sport” after spanking and taunting the crowd after her win over Australia’s Destany Aiava, but she has been labeled the “most hated player in the sport” since 2022. The British Open finalist didn’t care.

Ms Collins thanked the audience for funding her “five-star vacation to the Bahamas”, prompting criticism from many.

The Australian public may hate her, but she has an ally in Djokovic.

“I loved her reaction. I loved everything she said on and off the court. I’ve been a big fan of Danielle Collins ever since,” he said.

“I used to be like that, but now I’m a big fan, I love it.

“I heard some comments from people saying she shouldn’t have said that or that, and I think she handled it really well.

“I don’t think I would be that polite, but I understand how you feel.

“So I think she was funny and smart and just a big fan of what she was doing. Big fan.”

The comment came after Djokovic said “a few people here and there were disrespectful” at Melbourne Park.

“I understand you don’t drink much… then you get into it, but on the court it’s a frustration and it happens at the wrong moments,” he said. I did.

“If it’s always provocative, then of course you’re just going to react.”

Djokovic will next face Czech star Jiri Rehecica in the fourth round, aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam singles title.
