Over the past year, COVID-19 has changed society dramatically and cloud computing is now a must for most organizations. To date, by the end of 2021, 67% of all enterprise infrastructure will be cloud-based. But what does this mean for the culture of the organization, will it change – and should it change? After all, now cloud adoption is more than just the IT department. Whether it relies more heavily on the accounting team, closer collaboration with the business teams, or better information sharing with the in-house IT team, the cloud changes the dynamics of team interactions.
Today, an existing organization culture able to strongly predict the potential for cloud success; similarly the potential is taking a toll as well as changing the culture of the company. It can dramatically change the day – to – day work of individual IT staff, but with the willingness to adjust employee skill setsthe cloud can lead to a wide range of opportunities.
Connectivity creates the user experience
The first and most subtle change is the impact of cloud on the user experience. At the outset, organizations need to determine what workloads and applications should go into the cloud and what should stay on premises, and the best ways to address any potential connectivity concerns. soften the organization. Of course, connectivity is extremely important in all parts of the application, but external access is crucial, because the user experience is everything.
People often think of the cloud as this mystical wonder and, in part, it. But it’s still networking. This is where those IT teams and organizations that have already started to embrace the DevOps ethos will see the benefits because, as I mentioned earlier, communication between different silos is crucial and DevOps brings IT teams together. Organizations need to bring teams together to understand its workloads and functions across business units and departments. Successful cloud migration involves breaking down the walls that sometimes exist and developing that DevOps outlook. As companies grow not all employees need to talk to each other, but now everyone from the networking team to the infrastructure team needs to be involved.
Understand if the company is ready or not ready for cloud?
The culture of the company builds over time and sometimes this happens by accident and sometimes by purpose, but it usually has meaning for the employees who buy into the values and mission of the company. Cloud has the potential to change the dynamics of how IT and business work and it is understandable that the current culture of the organization can have a negative impact on cloud adoption and similarly cloud adoption can threaten the current culture of the company.
The culture change also comes down to how the company plans to use the cloud and whether or not the company is ready for cloud. If the approach is to move one of the traditional apps and verify these in the cloud, the company is not changing so much as it is adopting the cloud. Likewise, if the company views IT as a cost center – this is probably how they will approach moving to the cloud and trying to reduce costs and any perceived risk. The organization is unlikely to reap all the potential benefits that if they are too risk averse, they may miss out on market opportunities. Simply put, if IT is viewed as a necessary evil, this is not a good place to start.
Unfortunately, there are still IT people who look stunning as a threat, even in 2021, and if they look at cloud adoption with suspicion – there are likely to be difficulties. Some IT staff may not be necessary – there may not be enough projects to ensure everyone’s role is 100% safe. But in my opinion there are tasks that IT should not do; so many IT departments are stuck in legacy activities. If the organization does not put a premium on its staff to stay current and does not have a culture of continuous learning and embed this from the top down, then the IT teams will not improve their skills and will relentlessly succeed.
IT is seen as a partner and not a cost center
But equally, there is a real risk of not moving to the cloud and organizations need to think about that. Even if there are cultural challenges, companies need to push these forward so that IT is seen as a partner and not a cost center. This involves taking new ways of observing and solving problems – understanding the impact of decisions on outcomes – and finding out how all the different teams can come together and see the bigger picture to move on. Everyone needs to consider the long-term needs of the organization and not be near-sighted. And remember that the role of IT does not diminish as companies move to the cloud, so it makes both business and people more valuable in the long run.
