STEVE Bronski, co-founder of the 1980s pop group Bronski Beat, died at the age of 61.
The Glasgow-born keyboardist was born as Steve Forrest and formed a group in 1983 with singer Jimmy Somerville and fellow musician Larry Steinbachek.
Who was Steve Bronski?
Steve, officially known as Steve Forrest, was born on February 7, 1960 and grew up in Glasgow’s Castlemilk.
Alongside his bandmates, Steve was apparently gay, and the trio sought to counter what they perceived as the unpleasant nature of gay performers of the era through their music.
The band was formed in 1983 and the trio shared a flat in Brixton, London, winning a record deal in 1984 after just nine live gigs.
American Spin magazine described them as “probably the first real gay group in pop history.”
Bronski Beat’s debut single, Smalltown Boy in 1984, peaked at number three on the UK charts.
Summerville left the band in the summer of 1985 due to tensions within the group, and Steinbachek died in December 2016, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer.
In 2017, Bronski continued its trans-community campaign by renewing The Age of Consent to the newly titled The Age of Reason.
He told Penny Black Music: “The transgender community should not live in fear and gay children should not be bullied.
“We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.”

Summerville announced on Twitter the death of Bronski in images of three former bandmates.
