On September 17, 2021, Google celebrated the 133rd birthday of scientist and biochemist Michiyo Tsujimura.

Tsujimura is recognized as Japan’s first female doctor of agriculture.

Who was Michiyo Tsujimura, a green tea researcher?

Michiyo Tsujimura was born on September 17, 1888 in Okegawa City, Saitama Prefecture.

She taught science in her early career before pursuing her dream of becoming a scientific researcher at Hokkaido Imperial University in 1920.

She began investigating the nutritional properties of Japanese silk moths before transferring to the University of Tokyo, and began studying the biochemistry of green tea.

Tsujimura worked with Dr. Umetaro Suzuki on green tea research and discovered that drinks are composed of several molecular compounds.

These compounds include vitamin C, catechins and tannins, the latter of which constitutes the bitterness of green tea.

She developed a study of a treatise entitled “On the Chemical Composition of Green Tea” and later received a PhD in Agriculture.

Dr. Tsujimura also built his history as an educator when he became the first Dean of the Faculty of Home Economics at Tokyo Women’s Higher Normal School in 1950.

A stone monument honoring her achievements is in her hometown of Okegawa.

When did Michiyo Tsujimura die?

Tsujimura died on June 1, 1969 in Toyohashi at the age of 80.

One year before her death, she was awarded the Order of the Precious Crown, a Japanese honor.
