The government will begin discussions on new rules that will require businesses larger than a certain size to publish how much food they dispose of.

The crackdown will be a big boost to Sunday’s food waste war campaign. The campaign encourages businesses to find out how much they have in the trash.

According to experts, when a company measures food waste, it is easier to set goals to reduce it. And try to redistribute it to those who need it as much as possible.

At today’s MoS, government food waste emperor Ben Elliott wrote: Getting companies to measure waste is the first step for them to reduce.

To date, approximately 171 companies have reported food waste figures to the charity Waste & Resources Action Program.

Authorities have not yet decided whether the new rules for the disclosure of food waste data will only apply to large companies such as supermarkets and large food manufacturers, or to medium-sized companies.

The consultation will consider who the rules affect, when the rules apply, and possible penalties.
