Virginia’s father, 27, who is visiting his cousin in NYC, is shot dead on the Upper West Side in broad daylight

IN Virginia man visiting his cousin in New York City was shot dead in broad daylight while sitting in a parked car on the Upper West Side.

Ronald Thomas, 27, of Glen Allen, Virginia, was seen in an ‘intense’ argument with a woman when a gunman pulled into a car and shot him dead in the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 in which he was sitting, New York Daily News reported. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

When his family became aware of the attack, Thomas’ brother went into cardiac arrest. He remains in critical condition in hospital.

The murder of Thomas is the latest in a series of violent crimes in the Big Apple, with major crimes increasing by more than 40 percent in the past month, compared to the same period in 2021.

One neighbor, Maria Beltran, told the Daily News that this latest murder has people fearing for their lives.

“I’m not even coming out here anymore,” she said. ‘I just want the hell out of here. I’m going to the store now and then I’m going home. ‘

New Mayor Eric Adams, a former police officer, has vowed to curb crime in New York City and reduce bloodshed, one of the highlights of his mayoral campaign.

Over the weekend, he met with NYPD commanders to brainstorm and discuss crime strategies.

Ronald Thomas, 27, of Glen Allen, Virginia, was shot dead Sunday in a parked car in the Manhattan Valley neighborhood of New York City.

Thomas was shot dead at 12.15pm Sunday around 12.15pm at the Frederick Douglass Houses, a public housing development near Manhattan Valley, at W. 102 St. by Amsterdam Avenue.

Witnesses allege he and a woman were arguing when a police officer drove to the cul-de-sac outside the residential complex.

“I saw an argument,” neighbor Manny El Grande told the newspaper. ‘I just said it might be like a relationship, things are going … it was not my problem, so I kept running.’

The shooter picked up his weapon and opened fire, hitting Virginia’s father in the head. He then fled the scene, leaving Thomas dead in the Mercedes he was sitting in.

A resident who heard the gunfire reminded him that he saw Thomas’ sneakers banging out of the driver’s door.

Others saw a woman sobbing at the scene while police conducted the investigation. It is unclear if she was the individual that Thomas had quarreled with.

Thomas, originally from the Bronx, had been visiting family in the city. His cousin said he was shocked by the incident.

“It’s a tragedy,” Dwayne Martin explained. ‘This is crazy because it’s unexpected. I do not know who he came to see what happened. That’s not a guy. ‘

Martin and his neighbors shared how the murder of Thomas goes on to see how crime ran in the city.

“You do not really know what’s going on here or where people are in,” Martin said of the neighborhood. “I do not know what’s going on here, I do not know if it’s gangs or something.”

Carmen Quinones, president of Frederick Douglass Houses, said the community was ‘devastated’ by the loss of life.

“Everyone is devastated here,” Quinones shared. “We do not know him, yet we are devastated because this is his child.”

The death of Thomas remains under investigation and his perpetrator remains at large.

New York City has seen a more than 40 percent increase in major crimes in the past month, compared to the same period in 2021.

In January 2022, Mayor Adams unveiled a comprehensive plan to combat crime. This included increased foot patrols as well as the rise of a regular clothing unit called Neighborhood Safety Teams.

On Saturday, he met with 77 NYPD commanders and other top officials to discuss ways to combat the rise of violence in the city.

The mayor stressed the need for authorities to become more actively involved in the community, arguing that commanders should know school administrators, homeless shelters and other leaders in the districts they serve.

‘I need everyone to shop in,’ Adams told officers at the summit on Saturday, The New York Post reported.

He also asked for the input of all present commanders in what many consider to be a ‘very productive’ conversation.

“The mayor and command staff of the NYPD had a productive meeting today with commanders of the area,” Chris Monahan, president of the Captains Endowment Association, said after the meeting.

‘But not discussing the real problem of the increase in crime is counterproductive. We need to discuss the over-zeal [Civilian Complaint Review Board] and their lack of experience, prosecutors who refuse to prosecute or prosecute crimes and the state legislature which is good at keeping violent criminals on the streets. ‘

“We are here for them, the community – and the community is here as you can see,” said 7th Precinct Commanding Officer Luis Barcia WABC. “They are also doing their part and working with us to stop the violence.”

“This is how serious this is for everyone, including the mayor,” echoed NYPD Deputy Inspector Ralph Clement.
