Video: DJI Mavic drone operator screwed into a light bulb

How many drones do I need to replace a light bulb? Only one … the bulb is blown to the socket and screwed into place with the remote control

  • The pilot was able to screw the light bulb into the lamp using a small drone
  • Operators used Insta360 Go 2 camera to monitor difficult operations
  • Surprisingly, the operator was able to successfully dock the bulb to the fitting

This is the moment the drone pilot installed the light bulb using a quadcopter and a small action camera.

In a stunt set up by small action camera maker Insta360, a light bulb was attached to the wine cork that was affixed to the top of the drone.

A small action camera was attached to the back of the drone. This is because the camera that displays the top of the device is not installed.

The drone pilot used a wine cork to mount a light bulb on top of the machine and balanced its weight with an Insta360 Go2 action camera mounted on the back. The operator needed a camera to monitor the exact position of the light bulb compared to the fitting

When approaching the target, the operator had to be careful not to hit the drone's rotor with the light fitting. This can cause the device to plummet to the ground and crush the blades.

In the footage, the drone is maneuvering the living room and dodging furniture before climbing towards the luminaire.

The Insta360 Go 2 action camera on the back of the drone allowed the operator to see the threads of the screw-in bulb and align it with the socket.

The operator had to be careful when approaching the target so that the drone’s fast-rotating blade would not hit the light fitting.

The one-minute video shows the drone moving to a position below the ramp and gradually inching towards the target.

When the drone is properly placed under the lamp, the operator gradually increases power to dock the bulb into the socket.

The pilot then rotates the drone counterclockwise to screw the bulb into place.

After a few revolutions, the light bulb flickers.

The footage has been screened more than 3 million times on TikTok, providing a dramatic soundtrack featuring Matthew McConaughey in the hit Hollywood sci-fi movie “Interstellar.”

The operator was able to successfully install the bulb-the video did not show how to remove the bulb from the bulb and land the drone safely.
