Utah: Uber passenger dies after driver runs red light and crashes into train

A passenger died after an Uber driver ran a red light and collided with an oncoming train.

The driver, whose name has not yet been released, has been taken into custody after crashing into a TRAX light rail train in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Their car was “clipped” by an oncoming train after passing a red light before 8am on Wednesday.

The car was a gray Chevrolet and was going about 40mph. There was one person in the back seat.

The right side of the car sustained most of the damage when the two cars collided. All airbags were deployed, but passengers remained injured.

No passengers on the train were injured, but the Utah Department of Transportation announced significant service delays after the accident.

“You can’t beat a train. A train is always faster than a car,” said James Larson, spokesman for the Utah Department of Transportation. Fox 13“The difficulty with ridesharing is that it often relies on GPS.

Larson also said it takes about 1.5 miles for the Salt Lake City light rail train to stop. “When you’re approaching a traffic light and it turns yellow, slow down,” he said.

“Our hearts are with our passengers’ loved ones during this time of mourning,” Uber said. “We have deactivated the driver and are ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation.”

This is not the first rideshare passenger fatality this year. In July, a former employee of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo Died after being hit by an oncoming vehicle After his lift driver ejected him and several other passengers from the vehicle in the middle of the highway.
