Justin Thomas: It’s sad that LIV Golf eclipses the US Open
Follow live scores and updates from the U.S. Open at Brookline as the third major of the season kicks off amid the ‘dark cloud’ of the LIV Golf series. It’s already been a memorable week for the sport, as the inaugural event of the Saudi-backed competition got underway at the Centurion Club, while loyal supporters of the PGA Tour Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas performed at the Canadian Open. This sets up what should be an exciting week, as the two opposing sides of golf’s Civil War clash at the Country Club.
McIlroy, who took on the challenge from PGA Championship winner Thomas to claim the title in Ontario last week, is the favorite ahead of the US Open as he seeks to end his major drought. The 33-year-old has played sparkling golf at the previous two majors this season and feels confident he has the game to string together four regular rounds. The four-time major winner is also expected to be challenged by the defending champion Jon Rahmwho is among the first starters, as well as the champion of the Masters Scottie Scheffler.
Elsewhere there will be plenty of interest in the LIV Golf contingent, particularly Phil Mickelson, just days after the PGA Tour banned rebel players. Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed are among those who signed up for the controversial event and the reception they receive will be another talking point in what is expected to be an eventful week. US Open – Bogey for Morikawa
The first mark on Morikawa’s card, when he fell victim to the delicate 13th. The eight-foot par putt fell to the right and so far the back nine is indeed proving harder than the front.

McIlroy, purring. His approach in the 3rd threads the greenside bunkers and rolls into the heart of the green. Another birdie chance ahead.
Phew. McIlroy hit that. He touches the lip to the right of the hole and walks around it. He left about five golden feet per but it’s well done.

Yes, it was always going to be difficult for McIlroy to do anything. He takes it from rough to ooohs from the crowd, but from there McIlroy can only watch as he runs out about 12 feet past the hole.
For par, and the line is good… McIlroy crouches, the ball catches… and it falls! Another huge save by McIlroy! Brilliant recovery.
Morikawa, meanwhile, goes from a 20-foot putt for a birdie to a difficult uphill for his normal save after sliding past the hole. Morikawa knocks him down to stay ahead.
So, in the meantime, McIlroy and Morikawa have played 25 holes. No bogies.

Now. McIlroy’s first bad shot in a while comes from the tee box on the par-3 2nd, as he cuts it wide and to the right. It’s not where you want to be, as it’s tucked away in the long straw grass on the shore. It will be a tough chip to get back to green.

Joaquin Niemann has been there or thereabouts at both majors this season and the 23-year-old Chilean jumps on a headshot with an eagle at the par-5 8th.
Woah, McIlroy is a fraction away from a huge birdie putt on 1st! “Wow” he said after the putt rolled about an inch from the hole.

US Open – birdie for McIlroy
Then go. Another green made for McIlroy, and it was followed by another birdie as he rolled into the putt from 16 feet. He closes a clean opening nine of 33, which puts him one behind Morikawa.
Shaping to be a very nice battle, that. Morikawa and McIlroy are both halfway through their rounds, but of course they started at different times. McIlroy will then play the front nine with Morikawa on the back nine, which is considered the trickier of the two.
Jamie BraidwoodJune 16, 2022 3:06 p.m.
Be careful. as Morikawa reached the -3 turn after birdieing the third of the front nine. The Open champ drains one from 16ft to take the lead outright. Now imagine him re-enacting the drive and also being able to set up those trademark approach shots.
Rahm closing his front nine with a bogey to drop to -1. He was only inches away from making a normal long save after getting into trouble landing in the green side bunker.
Jamie BraidwoodJune 16, 2022 2:51 p.m.
Nice touch from McIlroy, who on the 17th threw less than eight feet… Not quite. McIlroy winces as the birdie putt stops dead.

US Open – Birdie for Rahm!
And here comes Rahm! This ranking looks good. The defending champion makes short work of the par-5 8th as he lands his third birdie in four holes and joins the field of players at -2.
Jamie BraidwoodJune 16, 2022 2:37 p.m.
US Open – Birdie for McIlroy!
Let’s go ! After saving the par 12-footer on the last hole, McIlroy birdied 20 feet on the par-3 200-yard 16th! Excellent putt from McIlroy. It was downhill but he hit it with confidence and good pace. He is in the red.
