University rankings have not taken into account the rising burden of distance learning in the wake of the pandemic, according to two online higher education institutions.
Despite the fact that the vast majority of universities now offer at least a few fully digital courses, there is still no online dimension in how institutions are rated and ranked, say researchers from the UK’s Open University and Barcelona’s Open University of Barcelona. Catalonia (UOC).
As a result, the couple worked with the Italian Institute for Educational Technologies to examine the criteria and indicators on which the rankings are based, as well as identifying new ones to enable a specific measurement of online learning.
Codur project (creating an online dimension for university rankings), they say, will increase equity and promote competition in online learning between universities.
Part of the importance is that a university’s ranking is one of the fundamental means by which it can position itself internationally, as well as a potential advertising tool for attracting students and funding.

Funded by the Erasmus + program of the European Union, Codur is coordinated by Albert Sangrà, academic director of the UNESCO Chair in Education and Technology for Social Change of the UOC.
“We didn’t want to create a new ranking for online universities, because it would be of limited value,” Sangrà said. “Instead, we set out to identify which criteria or indicators were useful to highlight the value of these universities.
“By and large, [the current criteria and indicators for rating institutions] the main universities benefit, which are the ones that organize these rankings. Harvard might be considered better than the University of South Africa because it decides which students to admit – the best – while at the University of South Africa everyone is welcome. This preselection affects subsequent results “.
The team’s proposals are starting to take effect. U-Multirank, a rating system that currently covers 2,202 institutions from 96 countries, has taken the multidimensional approach recommended by Codur, while Times Higher Education has partially embraced the suggestions.
