Ukraine’s war: Russia invades ‘opens new chapter’ in history, says PM as UK signs deals to protect Sweden and Finland | World news

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine “opened a new chapter” in post-Cold War history, Boris Johnson said as he negotiated defense agreements with Sweden and Finland.

The Prime Minister visited Stockholm and Helsinki to sign the agreements, which say that the United Kingdom will come to the aid of Sweden and Finland if they are attacked, and vice versa if the United Kingdom is attacked.

Speaking in Helsinki, Mr Johnson said that aid to Ukraine and support for Sweden and Finland were the key to opposing Russian President Vladimir Putin, otherwise “this would not be the end of his neo-imperialist revanchist ambitions”.

Impressed at the reason for supporting Ukraine, while people in Britain are under pressure due to the cost of living crisis, the Prime Minister promised that “of course there will be more support in the coming months”.

But Mr Johnson added: “It would be a huge, enormous mistake to think that the economic response is to leave Putin with his barbaric behavior in Ukraine.”

The Prime Minister made the remarks at a press conference alongside Finnish President Sauli Niinisto.

This is because both Sweden and Finland are considering joining NATO in the midst of Russia’s ongoing military aggression in Ukraine.

That could be seen as provocative by the Kremlin, but Mr Niinisto blamed the Russians for being more aggressive in their pursuit of the neutrality of the countries – and for showing that they were. ” were ready to attack a neighboring country “.

“My answer would be that you caused this – look in the mirror.”

Mr Johnson said it was a “pivotal moment” in the shared history of the United Kingdom and Finland.

He added: “The Russian invasion of Ukraine has changed the equation of European security and it has rewritten our reality and reshaped our future.

“We have seen the end of the post-Cold War and the invasion of Ukraine has unfortunately opened a new chapter.

“Finland has traditionally been neutral, but this [agreement] is to formalize and make clear something that needs to be made explicit in today’s context.

“That is, in the event of an attack on one of us, we will come to support each other.”
