Ukraine war: Last Ukrainian troops in Mariupol told to stop defending city | World news

Ukrainian troops, presumably the last fighting of Russian troops in Mariupol, have been told to stop defending the city.

News agency Reuters reports that the Azov regiment was only ordered to “save the lives of soldiers” in the port – a major military target for Vladimir Putin, who has been under bombardment for weeks.

The regiment says civilians and seriously wounded soldiers have been evacuated from Mariupol’s Azovstal plant, while those who died there are still being removed, according to a video statement by Denis Prokopenko, commander of the regiment.

“We constantly have the emphasis on the three most important conditions for us: civilians, injured and dead,” he said.

“The civilians were evacuated. The seriously injured received the necessary assistance and they were evacuated, to be later exchanged and delivered to territory controlled by Ukraine. “

He added that in the future he hopes that relatives will “be able to bury their soldiers with honor”.

Mariupol has been a major target for Putin since the war began and the city has been devastated after coming under barrage of attacks.

At one point it was rumored that thousands were hiding under the plant, including hundreds of civilians, and there have been several evacuations in recent weeks.

Before the war, Mariupol had a population of about 400,000, but this has dropped dramatically to less than a quarter of the original population, with the survivors struggling daily with a severe shortage of food, clean water and electricity.

Help did not reach the city and evacuating civilians was extremely difficult.

Taking the strategically important port city would give Russia its first major success in a war that saw its military not gain the upper hand against fierce Ukrainian defense.
