A police officer was shot dead by a man at a gas station Illinois A suburb of St. Louis, officials said.

Illinois State Police Trooper James Bufford confirmed that Pontoon Beach officer Tyler Timmins, 36, was injured at a hospital in St. Louis after shooting at around 8 am on Tuesday.

Timmins was shot at a speedway gas station along National Highway 111 when he approached the car on suspicion of being stolen at a gas station parking lot.

The suspect was detained.

Police officers were rushed to a nearby hospital in the city of Granite and then airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis, where they were sentenced to death. St. Louis Post Dispatch report.

Apparently, what aroused the police’s interest was the theft of a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck with a Missouri license plate.

Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting. The Madison County law firm said the investigation was ongoing and that a claim would be made once the request was submitted.

“The investigation is still in its infancy,” Buffford said, not immediately releasing additional information.

Edwardsville Police Chief Michael Philback said police officers throughout the region were taking part in Pontoon Beach patrols because they were so upset by the shootings.

Timmins had previously served the nearby Warden community as police chief in 2016, Preston Hall mayor said in a Facebook post.

According to BackStoppers, a group that supports the families of fallen first responders, Timmins officers have survived by his wife.

The BackStoppers Foundation said it would provide $ 10,000 immediate assistance to Timmins families to cover emergency costs.
