Brighton & Hove police warned the British to stay away from the beach at around 2:20 pm as the temperature reached 16 degrees Celsius.

What appeared to be a mortar ammunition was discovered, and a bomb disposal expert was dispatched for inspection.

The investigation is said to be “in progress”, but the beach is now safe.

Passersby Argus: “I think it’s a suspicious device, and obviously metal detectors have found it.

“They ask everyone to leave the beach and leave the area.”

Brighton & Hove Police said in a statement:

“The scene became safe while waiting for attendance from the explosives disposal.

“During that time, stay away from the area.”

The survey says so, but the beach is now safe "in progress"
