Thomas Tuchel Has Proved to Be a Great Appointment for Chelsea

There’s a lot of optimism among Chelsea fans: this season the Blues really could be strong title challengers in the Premier League. In particular, fans are confident in the abilities of their manager Thomas Tuchel, who’s set to embark on his first full campaign at the club.

Working With What He’s Got

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge last January, Tuchel has really impressed. He led the West London club to the Champions League trophy earlier this year, beating Manchester City in the final. Admittedly, the former PSG boss inherited a strong squad from former manager Frank Lampard, however, a lot of credit must go to the German for the marked improvement in results under his watch.

Chelsea are currently staked at 16/5 according to the Premier League outright odds on leading football betting sites, and that’s with only Manchester City ahead of them in that outright market. It’s promising to be a tough season ahead as Pep Guardiola’s side will be fervently looking to defend their crown following a comfortable success in the 2020/21 campaign.

Addition Of Lukaku Gives Tuchel Extra Firepower

Tuchel added to his squad over the summer with the signing of former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgium international scored 30 goals in all competitions for Inter Milan last season and helped them to the Serie A title in Italy. Lukaku is popularly considered as one of the best centre-forwards in European football. In addition, he knows the Premier League well as he also had spells with Everton and Manchester United before moving to the Italian league.

Tuchel had the chance to assess what he had within his squad in his first five months in charge. He clearly felt he needed another striker, and particularly a player with a distinct edge over those he already had at his disposal. In total, Chelsea spent £97.5 million to secure Lukaku’s services in what is a huge investment. The board clearly believe in Tuchel and are prepared to back him where they can in order to give him the resources needed to be successful at the club.

Morale Of Squad Appears Very High

Arguably Tuchel’s greatest success at Chelsea so far has been keeping his squad of players happy. They all appear as though they are on the journey with their manager and if that continues, more trophies could follow.

Tuchel isn’t afraid to make big decisions and this was made clear in the UEFA Super Cup final when he substituted goalkeeper Edouard Mendy for Kepa Arrizabalaga just before the penalty shootout. Mendy accepted the decision and it proved to be a winning one as Kepa was the hero in a shootout that saw Chelsea win further European silverware.

The reaction from the whole Chelsea bench following that game is further evidence of how high the morale of the squad is. With a lot of football ahead in the 2021/22 campaign, they’ll all know their opportunities are yet to come.

Tuchel has won a league championship twice in France with PSG, but this is set to be a bigger challenge. Manchester United and Liverpool are also fancied to pose a strong threat to Manchester City this season. If the Chelsea boss can work his magic again, it would be his best achievement to date in the sport.
