Thomas Tuchel: Chelsea boss says it’s ‘maybe impossible’ to close gap with Liverpool

Thomas Tuché says it’s “maybe impossible” to catch up liverpool in the space of a summer, with the chelsea manager ready to discuss plans with new owner Todd Boehly in the next weeks.

The German highlighted how they were in fact losing key players as Jurgen Klopp’s squad improved, a situation which proved even more problematic when it emerged that Andreas Christensen withdrew from the selection for the FA Cup final and was not injured.

It is claimed that the Dane wasn’t feeling well during the week and therefore didn’t feel ready to play.

It means Christensen may have played his last game for Chelsea, as he leaves Stamford Bridge without a contract this summer, as does his defensive partner. Antonio Rudiger.

Chelsea drew 0-0 with Liverpool in a domestic showpiece for the second time this season, having previously met them in the Carabao Cup final, only to Klopp’s side will win again on penalty kicks that resulted in sudden death.

That makes four draws between the two clubs in the 2021-22 campaign, despite Tuchel’s side 16 points behind Liverpool in the table.

The Chelsea manager wondered if that meant they could close the gap.

“It may be impossible,” Tuchel remarked. “I have to say, maybe impossible. They improve their squad with every transfer window they have.

“It looks like we are losing a key player. We lose, of course, Toni, we lose Andreas. So it’s difficult and we already have a narrow gap.

That day, Tuchel went with Rudiger, but Christensen didn’t feature.

It’s understood that’s because the Dane pulled out of the argument. Thiago Silva ended up firing in the game, but played and lasted through extra time.

Tuchel is due to discuss all of this with Boehly in the coming weeks, but said their first meeting – ahead of the FA Cup final – was more relaxed.

The 48-year-old said: “Not yet, we had lunch together but it was in the room where everyone was, like the players and the staff.

“He was very friendly, very open and it was a very informal meeting over lunch. It was like half an hour, 40 minutes so it wasn’t too detailed.

“It was just to get an idea and say hello, and we talked more about baseball and basketball actually. It wasn’t the time, we’ll do that next week, the next few weeks.”

Asked if Boehly shares Tuchel’s ambition, the German said: “He paid money for it, so I don’t think he wants to give up the ambition.

“It would be a big surprise, so no, I’m sure we will. We’ll be sharing our opinion in more detail over the next few weeks and I’m sure he’s also ambitious to build a competitive Chelsea for the highest level.
