New research has suggested that women are discouraged from entering the tech industry by a “toxic” culture in the industry.

Hiring Processing Outsourcing Provider Talent Works has released its Women in technology: time for a change whitepaper to answer a fundamental question: why are so few women working in such a booming industry?

The research, which interviewed 300 women in the UK and 400 women across the US East Coast who had worked in technology or were still actively working in the industry. It specifically examined whether toxic tech culture is affecting the number of women seeking work in the tech industry and whether sexism is actively deterring women from the industry.

Questions were also asked about the effectiveness of the intervention in attracting women to technology work.

The findings suggest that having gender-neutral language in job advertising has little to do with women not choosing the tech industry and that, rather, women are not applying for a job in the tech sector due to toxicity. within organizations.

Furthermore, the data identified shows that, in the short term, corporate culture must change before more women choose to enter the industry.

Research suggests that some progress has been made in attracting women to tech roles over the past decade, identifying key factors such as safe workplaces and emotionally intelligent leaders as some of the key deciding factors in helping companies attract female talent. .
