The Simpsons have been praised for introducing an exciting new character, the Breast Cancer Survivor, who has one breast after a one-sided mastectomy.
Dr. Wendy SageThe hypnotherapist made her debut in Fox’s anime comedy in a Sunday night episode of a hit show aired to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The character was created and spoken to by actress, writer, and breast cancer survivor Simpsons showrunner Matt Selman’s wife, Renee Ridgeley.

The episode entitled “Lisa’s Belly” was all about body positivity and showed the impact of parents’ words on their children.
After Marge told Lisa that she had a thick face, she developed the complex and led her to seek hypnosis.
The new character passing by the sage chooses to stop surgical reconstruction after a unilateral mastectomy and has one breast that the survivors call a “uniboob.”
She also has visible scars from where she had Port o Cass, a device placed under the skin to perform chemotherapy.

This episode was a monumental moment for breast cancer survivors, especially those who chose not to undergo breast reconstruction.

Ridgeley was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016 and initially chose to reconstruct after a mastectomy. However, she subsequently had her breast implants removed because she was causing health problems.

She told Yahoo Life that she was “hunting down a variety of people” in the entertainment industry, including her husband, about introducing a character who is a survivor of breast cancer.
Selman, who supports his wife’s advocacy, explained that he wanted to put an index card with the words “Simpson’s Unibouve” on his desk for several years to create a character that blended seamlessly with the show.
“We always aim to reflect the world as it changes for the better and for the worse. It’s usually a bad thing. — But we don’t want it to feel preaching or jamming. We wanted the fit to feel really good, “he told the outlet. “Audiences are very sensitive to the feeling of being in a lecture.”
When they began working on a new episode written by Juliet Kaufmann, he realized that sage was a perfect addition to the theme of body acceptance.
