During World War II, the home became a school for Jewish refugee children who had come to Britain through the Kindertransport program to escape Nazi Germany.
The Balfour family sold the house in 1963; it became a private school for boys, which closed in 1980; it became an apartment.
The house was described by a real estate agent as “one of the best of its kind, a truly unique mansion steeped in history”.
