The national student survey suggests a sharp increase in satisfaction with IT resources

The National Student Survey 2022 has suggested that college graduates are more satisfied with their higher education experience than they did in the pandemic years, with a marked increase in the perceived quality of IT resources.

The survey of 325,000 students across the UK suggests more students than “rat[e] their access to resources is positive, while opinions on the quality of teaching are still lagging behind pre-pandemic levels ”.

Among the English providers, there had been “some general improvements in students’ views on the quality of their education,” said the Office for Students, the regulator. The regulator observed “significant variations” between courses, with declines in positive ratings for medicine and dentistry, physical sciences and teaching quality.

Over three quarters (77%) in England agree that IT resources have supported learning well, up from 72% in 2021. Compared to last year, more students said that library resources, including online resources and digital repositories, and course-specific content, including structures, software and collections, had skillfully supported their learning. Overall satisfaction with learning resources increased from 73% to 81%.

Eighty percent said their teachers were easily contactable. But assessment and feedback scores were generally lower than in other aspects of the higher education experience. Only 66% agreed that feedback on their work was timely.

Susan Lapworth, interim chief executive of the Office for Students, said: “This year’s graduates have borne the brunt of the pandemic, with much of their time at the university struck by blockages and other restrictions on student life. The NSS played an important role in capturing student views during this extraordinarily difficult time for students and university staff. This year’s results show that there is still a lot to do if students’ views on the quality of their course are to improve to pre-pandemic levels. This should be an immediate priority for many universities and colleges.

“Universities and colleges in general have worked hard to return to teaching in person and ensure students have access to the facilities they need for successful study. It is therefore good to see a sharp increase in the percentage of students who agree that the resources offered by universities and colleges are up to par. But on this – and on every measure – there are substantial differences in the opinions of students depending on the subject they study.

“Now every university and college will want to reflect on the results to ensure that the quality of the courses remains high. The OfS is stepping up its efforts to ensure that students from all backgrounds have a high-quality education and we will draw on NSS results to inform our work. “
