Schools wishing to implement or update a management information system (MIS) are advised to consult with a wide-ranging Department of Education (DfE) overview of the most popular options.
“Choosing the right management information system has the potential to make a huge difference to the effective management of a school and the workload of the staff who must use it,” said the DfE.
MIS has undergone radical changes in recent years. As the DfE advice makes clear, the best systems are now able to:
- Cut costs to free up funds for teaching and learning
- Helps prevent cyber attacks and data breaches
- Increase teaching hours by reducing the time spent on workflows and data processing
- Speed up the production of internal and external reports
- It helps to collect and analyze data efficiently, improving the impact of interventions and, consequently, the results
- Improve communication at all levels
The new government council covers the eight MISs most used by schools, namely: Advanced Learning Cloud School, Arbor, Bromcom, ESS-SIMS, PupilAsset, RM Integris, ScholarPack, and SchoolPod.
No recommendation or approval is made by the DfE. Instead, the aim is to “clarify the key characteristics of each MIS and accelerate the time needed to restrict options to a shortlist of suppliers”.
Characteristics considered include costs, attendance data, pupil reporting, assessment and monitoring, cloud hosting, protection, behavior monitoring, interaction between parents and guardians, information on data protection and security.
“Schools still need to perform their own detailed due diligence, including checking the accuracy of information provided or collected from vendor websites, before making a final decision on whether to change the MIS and which MIS to move to,” he said. the DfE.
