Thames Water offers customers a financial incentive to switch early to a metered bill.

Water meters allow you to track your consumption. As a general rule of thumb, having more bedrooms than people in your home can save you money.

Thames Water aims to have water meters in all homes by 2035. It is writing to customers to offer them the opportunity to switch early to make savings.

Once the device is installed they have a 12 month grace period before they are automatically switched to a metered bill.

However, if customers choose to switch early, their account will be credited with the money they would have saved if they had switched when their device was activated.

If you wait until you are automatically moved to a counter, you will not receive any retrospective savings.

A spokesman for Thames Water says: “Smart meters offer a fairer way to pay bills by only charging for what is used. Each of our customers can also request a meter.’
