Job opportunities in technology have increased for 10 years as the demand for skilled workers outstrips the level of digital skills available in the UK, according to new data.
As indicated in s report from Tech Nation, data from job search engine Adzuna shows that tech roles currently account for 14% of all job opportunities in the UK and there are 870,000 tech and digital job vacancies available between January and May 2022. That’s up from 11% in 2019.
Although some technology companies have revealed plans to cut staff – such as the online car dealer Cazoo and event platform Hoppin – the research found that the technology sector in the UK continues to grow as a whole.
The most popular job title identified by the research was software developer, but demand for cyber security professionals has also increased significantly.
“The UK is in a golden age of technology. Not only are we one of the best places in the world to start digital businesses, but there are countless opportunities for people to enter the sector and succeed in their careers,” said digital secretary Nadine Dorries.
“We’re working hard to open doors for people from all walks of life so they can get the skills and knowledge they need to make the most of our booming technology industry.”
Dorries in June asked tech companies looking to fill vacancies with the best talent to consider recruiting from underrepresented backgrounds.
The Tech Nation report also found that demand for experienced tech workers with deep-rooted skills was significantly higher than entry-level tech hires, reflecting a lack of digital skills experience in the UK.
