This is the shocking moment a man self-immolated on a busy London street in front of stunned onlookers yesterday morning.

Officers desperately tried to douse the man with a fire extinguisher and covered him with a jacket as the man quickly burst into flames.

In the clip, which was widely shared on social media, members of the public can be heard screaming in fear.

The Met reported that the man self-immolated in front of police officers after being called to a domestic queue at an address in North Road, Islington.

The man was taken to the hospital, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

A police officer was also treated for minor burns but has since been released from the hospital.

As the incident unfolded while officers were already at the scene, a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the Metropolitan Transport Authority added.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Police were called to reports of a domestic disturbance at an address in North Road, N7, at around 9.25am on Friday, December 13.”

“Officers attended and found a man in the street who then set himself on fire. Police and members of the public worked to extinguish the fire. London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade also attended the scene.

“The man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening and non-life-altering conditions,” his next of kin noted.

“The police officer was also treated at the hospital for minor burns and has since been discharged.

“The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed.

Police were present when the man was injured and he was forcibly referred to the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
