Scottish school meals to be delivered by Skyport drone in trial

Skyports drone operator will begin delivering school meals to a Scottish primary school in partnership with Argyll and Bute Council.

Fresh meals will be delivered via a 1.5km Skyports drone from Park Primary School, Oban to Lochnell Primary School.

“The possibilities of using UAVs [Unmanned aerial vehicle] improving services to our communities is great. Argyll and Bute is a great place to test the effectiveness of drone technology.

“We have already seen how drones can deliver essential medical supplies to our islands,” said Councilor Robin Currie, Leader of Argyll and Bute Council.

Skyports London headquarters is designed and built landing infrastructure for vertiports as well as drone services.

The drones would be able to replace conventional modes of transport such as weather – affected ferries.

Councilor Currie said: “This is just the beginning of how drones can be used … From maintaining our assets including roads and bridges to inspecting offshore wind farms, developing the use of drones will help develop skills, create jobs and attract more investment to the area. . ”

Argyll and Bute Council’s wider plans include the creation of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Innovation Logistics Hub at Oban Airport which is expected to be completed by March 2025, with further plans including a vertiport facility.

Skyports in March raised $ 23m (£ 18.6m) in its first closure Series B funding round.

“Initial flights, performed using one of our Swoop Aero Kookaburra III aircraft, will enable us to carry out important proof of concept and feasibility tests.

“While the aircraft has a maximum payload of 3kg – it’s clearly not enough to sustain a hungry students’ classroom – this is an important step in the development of such deliveries,” said Alex Brown, drone delivery leader at Skyports.

The company previously worked with the Royal Mail for the First drone package delivery in the UK.

Last month Royal Mail unveiled its plans 50 new mail drone delivery routes in the next three years.
