Scammers arrested after livestreaming fake IPL from farmer’s field to con Gamblers in Russia | World news

A fake version of the Indian Premier League cricket – set to threaten gamblers in Russia – has been uncovered after police arrested the gang behind it.

The elaborate hoax saw the scammers rent a farm in Gujarat and set up cameras to film the fake games.

According to reports, workers and local unemployed were hired to pretend to be players and made false team names, with the players wearing official IPL kits.

The games were then streamed live on YouTube following unsuspecting betting operations in Russia.

The Times of India reported that a local man who could do a good impersonation of commentator Harsha Bhogle was brought in to add authenticity to the images.

“Sound effects of crowdfunding downloaded from the internet make the atmosphere seem authentic,” the paper reported.

Achal Tyagi, the top police officer in Mehsana district, said four men were arrested in connection with the hoax.

“They had referees with walkie-talkie sets to officiate as in IPL and international cricket matches,” he said.

“The set-up was good enough to deceive unsuspecting people into believing it was a real cricket competition.”

Mr Tyagi said the referees told the players whether to score runs or leave, depending on the instructions they received on the walkie-talkie sets received from the organizers, who in turn received instructions from an accomplice in Russia on the Telegram app.

Betting on cricket is illegal in India, and the four arrested are accused of criminal conspiracy and gambling.

The IPL, the richest T20 league in the world, was embroiled in its own illegal betting scandal in 2013, leading to a two-year suspension for its Chennai and Rajasthan franchises.

The media rights of the league’s 10 teams for the next five years last month raised the organizing Indian cricket board £ 5.2 billion.
