A mother has revealed her happiness in reuniting with her son after his father took him out for a walk 12 years ago and never returned.
Pavel (Pasha) Kanafin was just three years old when he was removed from the family home in Russia to neighboring Belarus – divorced him from his mother, Lyubov Kanafina, and twin brother, Mikhail, who has cerebral palsy.
But they were reunited after his grandmother brought him to Moscow to apply for a passport – which triggered a warning for missing person.
Lyubov posted on social media: ‘On the day my husband took Pasha away, I immediately turned to the police and made a statement about the abduction.
‘However, officials have explained to me that they can do nothing because the child was taken by his own father.
‘The police opened a search and advised me to divorce my husband and deprive him of parental rights through the court.
‘Only then could they, by law, start a criminal case and put Pasha on the federal wanted list. That’s what I did. ‘
The documents were ready by 2013, prompting the police to open a criminal case under Article 126 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (kidnapping).
Lyubov described the moment she learned her son had been found, saying, ‘For 12 years I did not know if my son was alive at all! His father has completely cut off all connection between us!
‘We wrote to all the authorities, searched everywhere, turned to broadcasts, but all to no avail. Pasha is found! It’s such luck! ‘
Pasha told police he was living with his father in the Belarusian capital, Minsk.
He said his father had told him about his mother and brother – but unfortunately had no memory of them.
“I went there immediately, to the department,” Ljubov said.
‘We tried to communicate, but Pasha does not know me at all and does not remember me, he is even scared.
“I decided not to put pressure on the child or do any more harm.”
Pasha will initially stay in a family support center in Moscow, where he will be provided with psychological assistance by specialists.
“Now I visit him every day, the communication is slowly getting better,” his mother said.
It is unclear whether the Russian or Belarusian authorities intend to bring Anton to justice.
