Robert Tanitch reviews Sister Act at the Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith, London

This big, hilarious disco musical from Alan Menken and Glenn Slater was set to open in 2020. Whoopi Goldberg, who played Mother Superior at the 2010 London Palladium revival, was set to play Deloris Van Cartier, the role she created in the 1972 film.

But Covid delayed production twice. Deloris is now played by Beverly Knight. Jennifer Saunders is the matron.

Deloris is a nightclub singer who witnesses a murder committed by her gangster boyfriend. She takes refuge in a convent, where she spices things up and teaches the nuns to break the habit and sing and dance.

Beverly Knight has the personality, the voice and the star quality, the role and such numbers as Fabulous, honey and sister act to need.

Clive Rowe is the cop who loves Deloris. When he sings, he has I can’t be that guynot one, not two, but three lightning quick costume changes, one after the other.

Lizzie Bea as a renegade ends the show with The life I never lived. The Damon Runyon-esque gangsters (Bradley Judge, Tom Hopcroft and Damian Buhagiar) have their breath-taking moment singing Lady in long black dress.

Bill Buckhurst’s frenetic production is very long and very, very loud. The finale of act 1, take me to heavenand the finale of act 2, Spread the love around and raise the roofhave the audience on their feet.

After his run in London sister act will be touring the UK and Ireland from September 2022 to June 2023, visiting 24 cities. Find out more at click here.

Note: The roles mentioned may be played by different actors on the UK tour.
