Researchers have created a stamp-sized ultrasound sticker that can image internal organs continuously for 48 hours.
Currently, ultrasound requires bulky and specialized equipment that is only available in hospitals and doctors’ offices.
But a new design by engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) could make the technology as wearable and affordable as plaster of paris at the drugstore.
The patch was tested on people doing activities such as running and drinking fluids.
Ultrasound allows doctors to see live images of a patient’s internal organs, and wands and probes are used to transmit sound waves through the body.
These waves are reflected back to produce high-resolution images of the patient’s heart, lungs and other deep organs.
MIT graduate student Zhonghe Wang said, “Ultrasound imaging devices have great potential for clinical diagnosis in the future.
“However, the resolution and imaging duration of existing ultrasound spots are relatively low, and they cannot image deep organs.”
In the study, researchers attached the stickers to volunteers and showed that the devices displayed vivid, high-resolution images of major blood vessels and deep organs such as the heart, lungs and stomach.
The stickers stuck well and captured changes in organs as people performed various activities, including sitting, standing, running and cycling.
Current designs call for connecting the stickers to instruments that map the reflected sound waves into images.
But researchers say they can have an immediate impact, even in this form.
For example, they could be applied to hospital patients, similar to ECG stickers for heart monitoring, and could continuously image internal organs without requiring the technician to hold the probe for long periods of time.
The team is also working on making the devices wireless, allowing patients to take them home from the doctor’s office or even buy them at a pharmacy.
Engineers suggest the devices could help people capture the moment of exercise before overusing it and stop before muscles ache.
While it’s not yet known when that moment might be, sticker images can provide image data that experts can interpret.
Senior author Xuanhe Zhao, a professor of mechanical engineering and civil and environmental engineering at MIT, said: “We imagine several spots that are attached to different places on the body, and these spots are connected to your mobile phone, where AI algorithms analyze the images. in the request.
“We believe we’ve ushered in a new era of wearable imaging: with a few patches on your body, you could see your internal organs.”
