As an actor, presenter and documentary maker, Reggie Yates has been a regular on our television screens since childhood.
The 38-year-old Londoner makes his debut as a filmmaker, writing and directing his latest project, Pirates, against the backdrop of Millennium Eve.
The story is relatively new to Yates, but he always told Sky News that he wanted to make a movie “from the moment I realized I was in the set when I was eight.”
“As an actor, I loved the idea of actually creating and running my set, but I couldn’t believe I could,” he said. “It wasn’t until I started writing very quietly and personally that my self-confidence began to grow.
“But this idea was specifically a new idea, a recent idea, not something I was sitting on forever, but that element-the London version displayed on the screen I see. I always wanted to see it on a big screen. “
As an actor, Yates appeared on shows such as Bill, Grange Hill and Doctor Who, but became famous as a radio host and host of television shows such as Top of the Pops and The Voice.
He already recognizes the benefits of having a presence in the industry, but he said that creating a pirate requires more than his reputation.
“It’s incredibly naive to say that I participated in this project and didn’t affect it to cross the line, but the truth is, if the script was garbage, they wouldn’t cause it. Would, and I’m working hard, so I have a 30-year career, “he said.
“I’ve been chasing my passion, very passionate about movies, finding the right team to collaborate with, and finding the budget to do this for that passion, so many times in my career. I have changed it.
“It happened because of hard work, and finally because of the story I wanted to tell.”
All first-time filmmakers can expect to tackle many challenges, but the people who worked when the pandemic broke out faced unprecedented problems.
“We had 10 days left to shoot, then COVID hit, took a 220-day break from the 25-day shoot, and finally returned to the set,” he said.
“So COVID-Aunt Rona who knows her affectionately-definitely prevented Pirates from being a clever process, but I found myself in a unique position that wasn’t the first. So I’m really happy that it happened in many ways Timewriter-Director gets. It actually sees what I’ve done, edits everything I’ve taken up to that point, and It’s a break to rewrite some things and throw in some new bits, so I prefer the movie. “
The pirates may have just been shown in the cinema, but Yates says his next movie has already been written and he hopes to make it next year. He also wants to work again with three young leading actors, Elliot Edusah, Jordan Peters and Reda Ellers Earl.
“I think I’ve learned a lot about collaboration and the importance of investing in your cast,” he said. “I spent a lot of time with these boys, they are now my brother, we talk almost every day.
“I learned the difficult way that documentaries can’t do that because I take everyone who makes documentaries. After 40 documentaries, it was a problem for many people, especially the center of all those documentaries. , Carrying something very difficult. “
It’s too early to see the box office, but Pirates has already proved a hit in the industry, winning three nominations at this year’s British Independent Film Awards, including Yates’ best debut screenwriter award. increase.
But he’s not keen to talk about his achievements-instead, nods say he examines the efforts of the team behind the film.
“It’s hard to get three nominations for this movie. I’m really proud because of the company’s efforts. I started in the theater. The company is what I love. People get together. I love this idea of making things. Things go well, this idea of the team, this idea that people really get together, and that’s certainly what happened in this movie.
“It makes a lot of sense, and even if I can’t win the night, I think I’m going to celebrate this movie anyway because it’s small. I don’t have the money. They paid me with custard cream.! We are nominated. Is a big deal. “
