RAY MESSI remains calm behind the wheel of the new Citroen C5X crossover

RAY MESSI manages to keep cool on the hottest day of the year behind the wheel of the new Citroen C5X crossover – and it’s not just the air conditioning

  • The C5X has the practicality of a wagon and the clean lines of a sedan
  • The C5X Plus Plug-in Hybrid 225 8-speed automatic costs from £39,960

On the hottest day of the year, I managed to keep my cool while driving the new Citroen C5X crossover. And it was not only about air conditioning.

My first drive in this stylish new car coincided with the asphalt melting in some areas. But I believe I still looked and felt the business in a car that has a distinctive, bold look.

The C5X combines three elements: the practicality of a station wagon, the sweeping lines of a sedan and the versatility of an SUV.

Versatile: The new C5X is the perfect combination of station wagon, sedan and SUV

Mine was the C5X Plus Plug-in Hybrid 225 with 8-speed automatic, which costs from £39,960 to £42,710 thanks to extras including metallic paint (£650), upgraded interior trim including comfort seats and massage (£800) and panoramic roof and sunblind (£1,300).

Combining a 1.6-liter PureTech 180 direct-injection turbocharged gasoline engine with an 81.2 kWh electric motor and a 12.4 kWh lithium-ion battery, my PHEV produced a total of 225 horsepower and from standstill to 62 mph in a respectable 7.9 seconds. Its top speed (where legal) is 145 mph.

However, when driven sensibly, the PHEV delivers up to 236 miles of fuel economy and up to 38 miles of emission-free electric-only range. CO2 emissions are only 30 g/km.

There are also two pure petrol options – the modest three-cylinder 1.2-litre 130 and 1.6-litre 180 – but significantly and deliberately no diesels. All power units are connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Complete with kit, the C5X is built for comfort rather than high performance, and it performs admirably. There are four driving modes: electric (provided you still have a charge); hybrid; comfort; and sports. I found it engaging and relaxing. Sport mode is excellent, while hybrid will save fuel – especially welcome in this time of skyrocketing pump prices.

There are three trim levels: Sense Plus, Shine and Shine Plus – prices start from £27,790 for the 130 petrol in Sense Plus trim.

I took it for a lovely relaxed spin through the green lanes of Worcestershire and Herefordshire and the towns and hills of the Malverns. I even pulled over for a sneaky peek at Shelsley Walsh Hill, but decided not to brazenly climb the course until no one was looking.

As a plug-in hybrid, it should prove easy on the pocket to own and run, with first-year tax of just £10 and a standard annual rate of £165 after that.

Another benefit is that you can generate an electrical charge while driving, further increasing fuel economy.

Citroen says that sales will be customer-oriented, which means they will be made to order – there won’t be many cars stocked in showrooms: “No car will be made without a customer.”

And the UK is a big market for Citroen, accounting for around 10 per cent of global sales.

Citroën UK Managing Director Jurig Druce said: “We are proud to be able to offer customers a completely unique model. There is nothing like the new C5 X on the market today, not only in terms of its looks and dimensions, but also in the way it combines the most advanced comfort features with the latest technology to deliver unrivaled comfort and peace of mind.”
