Vladimir Putin has compared Russia portrait in the West to the public backlash Harry Potter writer JK Rowling has confronted for making transphobic remarks.

The Russian president used a televised speech to launch a bizarre tirade against ‘the progressive discrimination of everything to do with Russia’.

He targeted various targets, including Hollywood, the US and Japan, and accused ‘them’ of covering up the Soviet army’s contribution to the fight against Hitler and the responsibility of the US military for the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

He added: ‘That they have just, cynically, annulled this truth. She recently canceled Joanne Rowling, the children’s writer. Her books are published all over the world.

‘Precisely because she did not meet the requirements of gender rights.

‘They are now trying to annul our country. I’m talking about the progressive discrimination of everything to do with Russia, this trend that is taking place in a number of Western states. ‘

He compared the ‘cancellation culture’ to the book burning of the Nazis of the 1930s, adding: ‘Such is impossible to imagine in our country and we are assured of it by our culture.’

The 69-year-old’s speech lamented the ‘public outcry and boycott or silence of facts, books, names of historical activists, writers who do not fit into modern stereotypes, however absurd they may be’.

He added: ‘This did not start yesterday, we know this well, in Hollywood they made films where the only country that the fascists defeated was the United States and said nothing about the Red Army, but if you look at the number of military units fighting in the East that was the Russian units.

‘That they have just canceled the Red Army’s contribution to the defeat of the Nazis.

‘And in Japan, they do not even mention who dropped the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, or they just say it was done by some abstract allies.

“The fact that it was the United States that fought such a horrific battle at the end of the war is not even mentioned.”
