Prisoner shot dead after bus escapes and kills family of five in Texas | US News

A prisoner was shot dead by police after escaping from a jail bus, stabbing her driver and killing a family of five, Texas authorities said.

Gonzalo Lopez, 46, was on a 100-mile journey from a Gatesville prison, Texas to another in Huntsville for a medical appointment when he freed himself from restraints.

He apparently cut the extended metal cage off the bus and crawled out from under it before stopping the driver and even taking the steering wheel.

The driver’s stab wounds were not life-threatening.

Lopez, a former member of the Mexican Mafia Prison Gang, allegedly arrived at the home of a family in Leon County on Thursday before killing the three children and two adults who remain there.

Police were called to the family’s home on Texas Route 7 on Thursday at 6 p.m., after an elderly relative reported that they were unable to reach her.

When they arrived, they found their bodies, said Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark.

The family’s white pickup was also missing, presumably taken by Lopez, she added.

The convicted murder, jail time in 2006 for the death of a man near the Texas-Mexico border, was the subject of an extensive police search after he escaped from the prison bus.

Authorities are offering a reward of $ 50,000 (£ 39,700) before he was found and “murdered by law enforcement in Atascosa County” for shooting at officers, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said.

Before he was killed, authorities had said: “Lopez has a complete disregard for human life and will do whatever is necessary to prevent imprisonment.

“We will take this investigation wherever it leads us until Lopez is back in custody.”
