Latest news in Ukraine: Vladimir Putin faces ‘very serious’ sanctions as Russia claims to have won ‘SHAM’ referendum

Thousands arrested during protests, UN ‘disturbed’

The United Nations on Tuesday alarmed credible reports that nearly 2,400 people were arrested in less than a week of protests in Russia against a draft order ordered by President Vladimir Putin.

“We are very disturbed by the reportedly large number of people arrested,” Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for the United Nations Office for Human Rights, told reporters in Geneva.

Russian authorities have cracked down on criticism of the war in Ukraine, arresting thousands of protesters since the conflict began in February.

But the number of arrests has surged since Putin last Wednesday announced partial military mobilization to bolster Ukraine’s armed forces.

Shamdasani pointed to “credible reports that about 2,377 demonstrators have been arrested in various parts of the country.”

“It’s unclear how many remain in custody,” she said.
