UK reiterates strong anti-whaling stance at International Whaling Commission

The government endorsed long-standing opposition to commercial whaling at the 68th meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in Slovenia this week, advocating for a moratorium agreed 40 years ago.

“Whales and other cetaceans are awe-inspiring creatures. We must continue to protect these extraordinary animals and end needlessly cruel commercial whaling worldwide.

“We are proud to play a leading role in ensuring continued support for the IWC and the moratorium on commercial whaling, and in urging countries to recognize the grave threat of marine plastic pollution. .”

The UK is strongly opposed to commercial whaling and continues to urge whaling nations to end whaling activities in favor of well-managed and responsible tourism. In 1946 she became a founding member of IWC, and the UK is proud to have supported IWC for the past 75 years.
