UK reiterates strong anti-whaling stance at International Whaling Commission

The government endorsed long-standing opposition to commercial whaling at the 68th meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in Slovenia this week, advocating for a moratorium agreed 40 years ago.

The UK has also secured further support for the conservation of whales, dolphins and porpoises (Cetaceans) and has been appointed Chair of the IWC Conservation Commission. Stranding and pollution.

Marine plastic pollution is a major problem for cetaceans and the UK is pleased to co-sponsor a resolution on marine plastic pollution. The IWC will thereby engage in the process of the United Nations Environment Assembly to promote international legally binding legislation on plastic pollution in order to promote effective measures to prevent or mitigate the impact of marine plastic pollution on cetaceans. International Maritime Minister Scott Mann said:

“Whales and other cetaceans are awe-inspiring creatures. We must continue to protect these extraordinary animals and end needlessly cruel commercial whaling worldwide.

“We are proud to play a leading role in ensuring continued support for the IWC and the moratorium on commercial whaling, and in urging countries to recognize the grave threat of marine plastic pollution. .”

The UK is strongly opposed to commercial whaling and continues to urge whaling nations to end whaling activities in favor of well-managed and responsible tourism. In 1946 she became a founding member of IWC, and the UK is proud to have supported IWC for the past 75 years.

The UK is disappointed that IWC did not agree to create a South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary, but will continue to promote the protection of these unique creatures that play an important role in the wider ecosystem.

The IWC is the only global body with powers and mandates for the protection and management of cetaceans and we are pleased that a budget has been agreed to allow the IWC to continue its important work.
