Wine of the week: Co-op Chilean Irresistible 30 Grad Pinot Noir 2021

This latest vintage of Co-op’s 30 degree Chilean Pinot Noir has just arrived in stores and will replace the previous 2020 version. And it’s another great wine that gets the highest 5-star rating, following the 2020 5-star and 2019 4-star ratings. The price has gone up by a pound, now it’s £8 a bottle, but this Casablanca Valley Pinot Noir is still great value and great value.

Flavors are lighter and sharper this time, predominantly cherry and mocha coffee rather than the intense raspberry, chocolate and liquorice of previous years. However, this fits with the cooler weather conditions in Chile in 2021, with the Chilean grape harvest report speaking of a fresher year with slower ripening resulting in higher acidity wines.

This is a great break from the hot weather and drought years of 2020 and 2019 when grapes were harvested early to avoid overripe after the lack of water caused early ripening. Very ripe grapes had high sugar levels and intense fruity aromas – which were reflected in the wines. The 2021 harvest followed cooler weather and this is reflected in the taste as well.

Enjoy this wine from Co-op now.

Flavors in 2021 are lighter and sharper this time, with a predominance of cherry and mocha coffee rather than the intense raspberry, chocolate and liquorice of previous years (2020 and 2019). The fruitiness of blackberries adds to the fresh taste, but there are also hints of toffee and dark chocolate. A beautiful wine that beats many French Pinot Noirs from the Burgundy region.

Leyda Single Vineyard Garuma Chilean Sauvignon Blanc 2021
£12 Tesco
4*
A nice wine with lots of fruity aromas. A nice balance of grapefruit, tangerine, apple, apricot, pear and apple – quite a fruit salad. There is a freshly cut grassiness that comes through later making the whole wine complex and flavorful. A cut above your usual Sauvignon Blanc with a pure gooseberry flavor.

Casillero del Diablo Reserva Pinot Gris 2021
£6.99 Canterbury Wines, £7.49 Iceland, £7.50 Tesco, £8.25 Co-op
3*
A reliable and drinkable Chilean Pinot Grigio with light and creamy aromas of pear and apple and a hint of orange. Not the cheapest out there but it will give you a consistent taste treat time and time again. Try the Co-op’s Casa Turano Pinot Grigio for £5 if you want a cheaper 5* wine.
