Paula’s Wines of the Week – July 29, 2022

Lidl French Wine Tour starts on July 28th

The latest Lidl Wine Tour kicked off on Thursday 28th July 2022 with all French wines in store. You can buy from a selection of 8 white wines, 16 red wines, 2 rosé wines and 3 sparkling wines from the French wine regions of Bordeaux, Champagne, Loire, Languedoc, Rhone, Burgundy and South West France.

Red wines dominate this latest French wine tour, with rich flavors of plum, blackberry, raisin and spice coming from wines such as Val de Salis Malbec Reserve (£6.99) and Madiran Domaine du Crampilh for £5.99.

Madiran is a region in southwest France at the foot of the Pyrenees, where red wines are made from the Tannat grape variety, which is rich in tannins. The tannins might be too dry on the palate if you don’t like such full-bodied red wines, but they also contain something else – polyphenols. In 2006, research discovered that these polyphenols were good for human health – especially our heart health – and this led to the now famous Red Wine Diet advocated by Professor Roger Corder. This meant that a few years later we were all instructed to drink tannic red wines and dark chocolate.

Madiran wines are still around and you can find another excellent example at Tesco for £7.

If you’re looking for a white wine version of the Madiran, try the Cotes du Rhone Blanc (£5.99) with its flavors of candied peel and peach. But let’s not forget that it’s still summer and people are still looking for lighter, more refreshing flavors. The £4.99 Colombard Sauvignon offers reliably refreshing flavors that pair well with almost any summer dish, and it’s also great value.

Of the two rosés featured in July’s French wine tour, the £6.99 Vallee du Sud Languedoc rosé is the best for the hot, muggy days to come (but no more heatwave!), while the Cremant de Loire rosé also comes with one sparkle awaits.

So there’s plenty to choose from, but here’s the pick of the best. recommends
