Top Ten Summer Pinot Grigios

Despite its popularity, Pinot Grigio does not make the top ten most planted grape varieties in the world. That top spot goes to Cabernet Sauvignon, with the most popular white varietal being the unknown Airen – which just goes to show you can be on top but no one has ever heard of you. But what about Pinot Grigio?

Of the nearly 60 million liters of Pinot Grigio sold in the UK, just over a third came from Italy, with the remainder coming mostly from the US, Australia, Romania and New Zealand.

Which is a bit of a surprise, as you’re unlikely to find a non-Italian Pinot Grigio on supermarket wine shelves. Asda stands out in this respect with its Nice Drop £3.99 Chilean Pinot Grigio coming in at number 8 on the list wine uncorked top ten list and German Co-op’s Kleine Kappelle at number 7. But there are a few others who didn’t quite make it – watch out for Aussie McGuigan (£7.50, Co-op), the Hungarian Campanula (£9.99, Laithwaites) and Californian Barefoot Pinot Grigio (£6, most supermarkets).

Wherever it comes from, the light pear and lemon flavors of Pinot Grigio pair beautifully with the summer sun and just sitting with a glass in hand. It pairs well with lighter-tasting foods like seafood linguine or picnic snacks, and makes a great stand-by in your cupboard. So why not go out and get some bottles in! That wine uncorked The top ten list will help you find the best ones.
