Ed Byrne is among a group of comedians who pay emotional tribute to his younger brother, who died at the age of 44 after battling cancer.
Mr Byrne has battled Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that attacks the body’s lymph nodes.
He was diagnosed early in the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013, prompting comedians including John Bishop, Phil Jupitus and Jason Byrne to raise money for him.
Now, however, his brother Ed paid tribute to his brother, saying he “will miss him so much.”
He wrote on Twitter: “Paul Byrne was a lot to many people.
“A talented comedy director and stand-up comedian, he was loved by so many.
“But for me, he was my torturous little brother and I will miss him so much.
“RIP Paul Byrne 1977-2022.”
His agents, Individual Artist Management, said in a statement. They said: “After a short illness, we are extremely sad to confirm that Paul Byrne has died at the age of 44.
“Paul was an outstanding comedy director and worked on groundbreaking and groundbreaking shows for some of the best comedy talents in the UK. His knowledge and understanding of stand-up was unsurpassed, as was his ability to help comedians find their voice.
“The list of shows he has worked on, nominated for or won awards both in Edinburgh and abroad has been extensive and speaks to his incredible talent for talent development.”
Other comedians also shared their memories of Mr. Byrne on social media today.
Omid Jalili said: “I am very sorry to hear about the deaths of comedy director Paul Byrne and the younger brother of Ed Byrne – a very dear soul with whom I laughed a lot at various festivals in Edinburgh.”
Ben Target also wrote: “I feel incredibly grateful to have met him and worked with him. He always gave generous and honest advice, he knew the funny better than anyone.
“He was loved by all. I will miss him.”
Tiernan Douieb added: “This is really sad news. Paul has directed three of my shows and I can honestly say that I haven’t had so much fun working on something since.
“A truly wonderful, brilliant man who was almost always the funniest person in the show room, even though he was the only one behind the scenes.”
Jason Manford also paid tribute and expressed his condolences.
He said, “Oh, Ed, I’m so sorry you were such a great person, and my thoughts are with you and your family.”
David Badiel added: “I’m so sorry to hear this Ed. All the best and I’m thinking of you.”
Richard Herring said, “A lot of love for you, Ed. He was loved by a lot of people and will miss him a lot.”
