Online training courses for college teachers aim to address the retention crisis

After Coventry University’s teacher training school has achieved prestigious government “institute” status, its director hopes its online courses will help reverse the profession’s recruitment and retention crisis.

Plans for a national teaching institution were announced in 2021 by then Secretary of Education Gavin Williamson. It is part of the government’s efforts to increase Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for experienced teachers, improve post-qualification training for newly qualified teachers (NQT), and offer places to more trainees.

Coventry’s National Institute of Teaching and Education – launched in 2019 as the National School of Education and Teaching (NSET) – gained institution status earlier this year in what its director hopes will bolster its aspirations to deliver. more teachers the opportunity to train and improve themselves.

The institute offers flexible part-time courses to help aspiring teachers kickstart their careers and progress already in business into more senior roles.

NITE’s ambition is to alleviate the recruitment and retention problems facing the teaching profession. The latest government figures show a 24% drop in initial teacher education applications before September 2022. Currently, one in six teachers quits after just one year and another quarter within three.

Courses include short residential training trips, where NITE students can meet up with other aspiring professional teachers to master their craft and gain hands-on skills from industry experts.

Some teachers can also study with NITE for free through the apprenticeship levy, which allows schools to have fun with teacher training.

Teaching is a vital profession, but it is undoubtedly facing some huge challenges right now, both in terms of recruiting and retention.

“We hope our offering will help encourage more teachers into the profession and keep them on board longer, allowing them to progress. The appetite and interest so far has been excellent and we are fully confident that we can continue to offer a truly unique and crucial service to the teaching and education industries. “
