On this day in 2016: Tony Bellew wins WBC world heavyweight title

Tony Bellew won the vacancy UK world heavyweight title that day in 2016.

The Liverpudlian, an avid Everton fan, won the belt with a knockout in the third round of Ilunga Makabu at Goodison Park.

Bellew had a chance to challenge for the title after defending champion Grigory Drozd left him through injury, but it looked like Makabu could win after sending the home favorite to the canvas in the third round.

But Bellew recovered and unleashed a barrage of left hooks in the third round that floored Makabu, with the referee intervening.

It was a glorious moment for Bellew, who claimed a world title on the third attempt after previous bouts against Nathan Cleverly and Adonis Stevenson ended in defeat.

After a routine defense against BJ Flores, Bellew moved up to heavyweight to settle his rivalry with David Haye, with two successful – and lucrative – fights.

He returned to cruiserweight to face the undisputed champion Oleksandr Usykbut lost and subsequently withdrawn.
