An immunologist warned of a new strain I’m sick It can cause various symptoms – including those that appear at night.
Omicron BA.5 is a highly contagious subvariant that is causing concern because it is contributing to a new wave of infections around the world, including in the UK.
Scientists discovered differences with previous strains, including Ability to re-infect humans within weeks of covid.
A leading immunologist now suggests that this may be the cause of the new symptom in patients.
“One additional symptom from BA.5 that I saw this morning is night sweats,” Professor Luke O’Neill of Trinity College Dublin told an Irish radio station earlier this week.
“Isn’t it strange?” he added.
BA.5 causes an increase in cases in a number of countries along with BA.4, including across Europe and Australia. He also became the dominant option in the US this week.
“The disease is slightly different because the virus has changed,” Professor O’Neill said Newstalk on Thursday.
He added: “There’s some immunity involved – obviously with T-cells and so on – and a slightly different mix of your immune system and the virus can cause a slightly different disease, oddly enough night sweats. .
“But it’s very important if you’re vaccinated and boosted, it doesn’t turn into a serious disease, is the message to keep reminding people.”
It was BA.5 It was first discovered in South Africa in February, one month after BA.4 was detected in the same country. Both have since spread around the world and raised concerns about a resurgence of Covid infections.
That equates to 2.7 million infections — up 18 percent from 2.3 million the previous week.
That’s the highest estimate since late April, but still below the record high of 4.9 million set in late March.
