What is the Northern Ireland Protocol and why is it important?

By introducing legislation that appears to violate international law, Boris Johnson is battling not only the EU but also some of his MPs, members of the House of Lords.

The Conservative chairman of the Northern Ireland Electoral Commission, Simon Hoar, said today that the move “would be an indelible mark on our country’s reputation” and called on colleagues to ask them “what would we say if the Labor government did that?”
